Following weeks of tension, schemes and backstabbing, Celebrity Traitors has reached a thrilling end
Spoiler alert - This article discloses details from Celebrity Traitors conclusion
Throughout the season, audiences saw eliminations, double-crosses, serious side-eye, and a memorable moment that pierced the overwhelming suspense.
However on the final evening, the final winner of the inaugural celebrity edition was revealed.
Out of nineteen participants, just a handful were left standing: Traitors and faithfuls facing off for the winnings.
Soon, the field narrowed to just three: the final players.
In the end, funny man Alan Carr emerged as the winner, in a surprising result that went viral and made him tearful.
"This has been destroying me, my apologies," he exclaimed, revealing to the remaining faithfuls that he was actually one of the deceivers. "I'm an awful human being."
"You played amazingly," they comforted him. "Everything's fine."
Social media quickly erupted with this development. "The worst deceiver being the most effective player," commented one user.
"There could not have been a more iconic ending," wrote another, while someone else called it "the TV moment of the year."
His chosen charity, a cancer charity, gets to keep the entire winnings, with the final pot reaching £87,500.
Alan Carr's transformation from giggle liability to cold-hearted killer was among the most memorable aspects of the series.
But his win still left the nation surprised, as noted by industry observers.
"The idea of Alan, among everyone, executing an expert performance in deception felt about as likely as him maintaining composure through one of his own punchlines."
During follow-up conversations, the other contestants summed up why no one had truly doubted him.
"He might have appeared to the morning meal in a green cloak and I still wouldn't have thought he was deceiving us. I was too busy laughing," a player said.
"Most people didn't vote for him because how does one eliminate a person so charming?" questioned another celebrity.
Carr said he had "absolutely loved" his experience with the show.
"I'd like to do it again... I don't think it would work a second time!"
The final episode was lengthened to 70 minutes on the network. There was an unusual opening than typical episodes, as all the celebs knew who'd make it at the morning gathering.
Viewers heard some very uplifting, and very un-Traitors-esque soundtrack, as we recapped some moments from each of the finalists' time in the castle.
True to form, Alan Carr gave us some of the most memorable lines.
"To be honest, I started the competition as something of an anxious mess. I've betrayed close allies to save myself, I've eliminated beloved figures in plain sight. I'm clearly a better liar and player than I believed."
At the same time, a different player commented that reaching the conclusion was "significantly more pressure than playing for England", while another said he was "totally surprised" to have made it so far.
Early on in the episode, various contestants appeared to be making a bid to become the fashion standout of the castle, taking over from the previously eliminated fashionable contestant.
The winner appeared at the morning meal looking like a 1950s US chat show host in a checked maroon suit, later switching into an embellished light-colored outfit.
However, he got outstyled by a fellow player's burgundy formal wear. What a look.
Following this was the competition, with the remaining contestants boarding a train named - of course - The Traitors Express.
This task involved destroying portraits of eliminated players. Spare a thought for a player who was hit on the head multiple times by the cover of a heavy wooden box.
Before long, it was time for the roundtable.
Two traitors made a pact in advance, vowing to support each other. "We've come a long way, I'm not going to betray him," stated one, while the other simply laughed.
And one adhered to his promise. Yet, managing to stay unnoticed for most of the game, their partner still received the majority elimination votes.
The last deceiver appeared he was in a world of pain to be the final deceiver remaining. "Being alone, I feel terrified," he said. "I'm unpredictable, a rudderless ship."
Social media and onlookers were equally disappointed.
"I hoped against that player to be eliminated. A truly loveable traitor," said a commentator.
"Your legacy will remain in Traitors history," wrote a different viewer.
But there was little opportunity to focus on their elimination. Before long, the game reached the endgame - this being the moment everyone anticipated.
The final four gathered around the fire pit. And the alliance broke down, precisely when it was most crucial, in an absolutely shocking development.
A player was painfully banished - following a surprising decision from their ally, who betrayed them.
"This pains me to be stabbed in the back last minute in that manner," remarked the eliminated player. Subsequently, it was revealed that when they message, the betrayed player refers to their former ally by a betrayer's name.
Finally, only three contestants were still competing: the last participants.
A contestant, looking incredibly smug, voted to end the competition. The same decision was made by a different player, and it all came down to the third, who did the same - resulting in the traitor emerged victorious.
For observers, the scene where the other players comforted the winner was "beautiful TV". "I predict it will be in the running for memorable moment at television honors," they said.
Fortunately, the winner soon recovered from his emotional outburst, and could finally appreciate the moment.
"Such an emotional journey. I was awful at lying, I had no poker face and now I stand the champion," he said.
And he even made light of the memorable elimination - his best friend in an early episode - by leaning toward the presenter in the final scene and making contact.
"There's something on your face," he said, with his characteristic laugh.
The recent episodes of celebrity gossiping, plotting and sometimes unexpected moments may seem like one big crazy jumbled dream. Yet it actually all happen. And we will miss it.
